Biography:
Born in Albany, New York on October 19, 1853. Died in Needham, Massachusettes in 1929.

Garrett was a highly respected painter, famous for his illustrations of the legends of King Arthur. He was also an American illustrator, bookplate-maker, and an author.

Very little is known about his initial art education. Garrett was a distinguished member of the Boston Art Club which started in 1840 and the Copley Society. It is likely that he received some training from the Boston Art Club. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefebvre, John Paul Laurens, and Hector Leroux. After living in Paris for about five years, he returned to America and established a successful studio in Boston. His first original wood engraving was created in 1879 with Robert Swain Gifford as his tutor. Garrett specialized in architectural views and landscape original prints and his later etchings were mostly of areas around Boston.

Childe Hassam, a renown impressionist, was an acquaintance and colleague. During the late 1870's Garrett and Hassam became friends and Garrett was the influence for Hassam's first study trip to Europe. On June 30, 1883, Garrett and Hassam sailed to Europe aboard the SS Anchoria, then travelled for several months. They studied the paintings from the old masters, creating watercolors of the countryside throughout Great Brittain, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain. In late August, 1883, they both sailed aboard gthe SS Alsatia to several Spanish ports before returning to America.

Garrett's work is in the collections of the New York Public Library, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Winchester Museum in Winchester, Massachusetts.
